History
Birmingham Academy of Martial Arts was started in 2005 in Trussville,
Alabama by Sah Dan (4th degree, Master) Heather Potter and her
husband, E Dan (2nd degree) Will Potter. (
Read about them here.)

When it came time to select a location, we chose
Performance Fitness
Center because it has facilities that offer individuals and families an
enormous opportunity to get and stay in shape. It also had a convenient
location and great staff. Our agreement with PFC allowed us to keep our
fees lows and they have extended special incentives to our members if
they decide to join the gym.

In May 2007, we had outgrown the space at PFC and moved to our own
location in the Valley View Shopping Center, next to the Trussville YMCA.
We now have over 1,000 sq ft of padded training floor and our own
pro-shop area.

Our Focus
We teach traditional martial arts in an environment that encourages
students to learn and grow. We have
programs geared for select age
groups starting at four years old.

Our curriculum covers self-defense, sparring and traditional weapons.
While learning these things, you will build endurance, coordination,
flexibility, balance and confidence. Plus you'll have fun doing it.

Although our
Federation has sanctioned tournaments and we do attend
open tournaments, competitions are not our primary focus. While our
students place very well at these events, we are striving to make martial
artists that perform just as well outside of competition. For us, a trophy is
not the goal - a better person is.

The Family
Another thing we take pride in is our family-friendly atmosphere.

Parents of our Kid Tiger program are welcome to sit and watch their
children grow and blossom.

For young students that are enrolled in our other programs, we
encourage parents to take classes with them.
Unlike other sports, Tang
Soo Do is something in which parents can
actively participate
along with their children.
We have several families already taking
classes together.

The Community
We believe that community is the extension of family. As such, we attempt
to make our communities better places for ourselves and our children.

One of our first steps was to join the
Trussville Chamber of Commerce so
that we can interact with members of Trussville's business and civic entities
. We did this so that we could have an ear and voice in how our city and
its people develop.

At Christmas 2005, our students worked with the Trussville Fire
Department's "Christmas for Kids" campaign to provide toys and food for
needy area families during the holidays.

In 2008, we hosted a  Family Safety Day that was free to the public to
provide safety awareness and techniques to the community. We were
joined by police and member of the Trussville fire department.

To fulfill our desire to get involved in all of our local communities, in 2008
we also joined the
Clay Area Chamber of Commerce.
